BEIJING– Huawei is set to launch its latest trifold smartphone, the Mate XT, a Z-shaped trifold phone. According to Huawei’s website, Huawei’s Trifold Phone has already secured 3.6 million pre-orders days ahead of Apple’s iPhone 16 launch.
Apple departed from the top five smartphone vendors in China during the second quarter. It was the first time that domestic players held all five spots. It’s important to know that Huawei is now selling more than Apple’s iPhone in China. This is because of new technology, feeling patriotic, and changing situations in the world.
Both the Mate XT and iPhone 16 will go on sale on Sept. 20. However, the Mate XT will only be available in China.
“Apple hasn’t fallen, but Huawei has truly risen again,” commented one user on Weibo (China’s equivalent to X).
Another left a comment: “Times are changing. U.S. sanctions have been in vain.”
However, many people thought that the Mate XT’s starting price of 19,999 Yuan ($2,800) was too expensive for most people. And not considerate during a time when the economy is slow and people are grappling with the financial uncertainty.
Versions with more premium features, such as larger memory, will cost as much as 23,999 yuan ($3,300).
According to a survey conducted on Weibo regarding the Mate XT, only 966 out of a total of 9,200 respondents indicated their intention to purchase it. More than 4,700 said they were put off by the price.
A person surnamed Xu at a Beijing Huawei store, describing himself as a Huawei loyalist, said: “No matter how much I like the product, the price tag just sounds crazy to me.”
“Maybe Huawei isn’t really targeting people like me,” he added.
