Tom O’Malley, Barclays analyst along with his team recently visited Asia to engage with a variety of electronics manufacturers and suppliers. The analysts in a research note published this week summarised their findings from the trip, in the note, it was indicated that they are supposed to confirm plans for a fourth-generation iPhone SE that features an Apple-designed 5G modem

The Apple-designed 5G modem is supposed to be launched towards the end of the first quarter in 2025 and this projected schedule aligns with the rumours earlier that suggest that the new iPhone SE could be available for the users in March.

The upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE is expected to be similar to the standard design of the iPhone 14. A Face ID, an OLED display 6.1-inch, a C-port USB, an A-series chip, 8 GB RAM and a single 40-megapixel rear camera for supporting Apple Intelligence could be the features that might be included in iPhone SE 4.

It has been a rumour that Apple has been developing its own 5G modem for iPhones since 2018 and this strategy will allow the company to lessen as well as eliminate its dependency on Qualcomm. Earlier this year, Apple extended its supply collaboration for 5G modems with Qualcomm through the year 2026. This signifies that Apple has enough time to finalise the transition to its proprietary modem.

It is expected that the iPhone 17 Air will also come with an Apple-designed 5G modem along with the fourth-generation iPhone SE, as per Analyst Ming-Chi  Kuo. However, it is not clear whether Apple’s Inaugural 5G modem will offer any advantages to the consumers as compared to Qualcomm’s modem like boosted speeds. The third generation iPhone SE was revealed by Apple during an online event in 2022 and has a resemblance to the iPhone 8 including features such as a Lightning port, Touch ID button, etc.
