Reporters Without Borders is a major advocate for press freedom and is calling on Apple to eliminate the newly launched artificial intelligence feature. It summarizes news articles following a misleading headline that has been generated from a BBC report.
The controversy erupted after a push notification from Apple Intelligence which was sent to users last week. It was inaccurately summarized in the BBC article that the individual, Luigi Mangione who has been accused of murdering the CEO of UnitedHealthcare has taken his own life.
It has been indicated by the BBC that they reached out to Apple because of this issue looking forward to addressing the concern along with rectifying the error. However, it remains unclear whether Apple has replied to this inquiry or not.
Vincent Berthier, the head of the technology and journalism desk at Reporters Without Borders, on Wednesday, urged Apple to act responsibly by removing this feature.
Berthier remarked, “AIs operate on probabilities, and facts shouldn’t be left to chance. The automated generation of false information linked to a media outlet undermines its credibility and poses a threat to the public’s right to accurate news.”
The organization has expressed broader worries about the dangers new AI technologies pose to media outlets. It has been stated by the organization that this incident highlights the current inadequacy of AI in delivering reliable information to the public.
RSF mentions, “The probabilistic nature of A.I. systems disqualifies them as a dependable technology for news media intended for the general public.” BBC in response to these concerns has focused that it is required that the audience puts their trust in any information which is provided by them even if it is a notification.
The lack of control news organizations have over automated systems was highlighted because of the issue with the Apple Intelligence incident.
