Canon has launched an innovative live streaming application that allows users to wirelessly connect and switch between video feeds from three mobile devices. Right now it is compatible only with the iPhones and iPads that operate on iOS and iPad 16 or later.
While Android users are left out, an even more puzzling aspect is that the ‘Live Switcher Mobile app’ does not even support any of the digital cameras of Canon. However, the company has indicated that this feature will introduced in the future.
The application is now available for download at no cost, though with certain restrictions. Users can stream video at a maximum resolution of 720p but there will be a watermark in the output. Also, the interface may be cluttered with ads, though, these ads will not be visible to viewers.
For a subscription fee of $17.99 per month ($215 annually), users can upgrade to 1080p quality, removing both watermarks as well as advertisements. However, there is no option available to boost the video resolution beyond HD.
One device acts as the host, offering the switching interface and serving as the main camera. Up to two additional devices can be linked to offer video feeds from different perspectives or to capture live gameplay.
Users can also switch between feeds manually, however, for those who prefer a hands-off approach, the application can be programmed to automatically alternate between sources at intervals ranging from 8 to 20 seconds.
It also supports simultaneous streaming of multiple videos using a picture-in-picture effect, also the users can enhance their live streams with text and image overlays for branding and captioning. Canon mentions that the app can do live streaming to platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, as well as other services that support RTMP. The comment display feature for users is only limited to the first two platforms.
