Samsung brings kid friendly features to Galaxy Watch 7

Samsung bought a piece of exciting news about its wearables just before the Unpacked event. The cellular Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 can now serve as a smartwatch for children.

With the introduction of the Galaxy Watch for Kids mode, youngsters can make calls as well as send texts to trusted contacts, while parents can keep an eye on their children’s whereabouts through GPS tracking. This feature which has already been released will be compatible with T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T networks.

Parents will not need an extra smartphone for this functionality. It will operate similarly to the Family Setup of Apple allowing parents to pair and configure the smartwatch using their own devices.

They can establish boundaries through the Google Family Link app, controlling which apps can be installed. Along with this, it can locate lost watches as well as designate specific contacts for communication.

In case of emergencies, children can also activate SOS features by pressing the side button five times. Additionally, a School Time mode is available to restrict features during school hours.

In a recent blog post, Google highlighted that kids can access 20 ‘teacher-approved’ applications and watch faces from the kid’s section of the Google Play Store.

These include fun themes such as Barbie, Rubik’s Cube, and Marvel along with educational games from PBS Kids and Crayola. Other third-party apps can also be downloaded however, they will need parental consent.

While Samsung is making strides, it is worth noting that they are not the pioneer in this space. Apple first launched its Apple Watch for Kids in 2020. Last year, Google introduced the Fitbit Ace LTE, a revamped GPS tracker for kids that focuses on educational gaming.

Parents have been highly expecting this feature as it was seen in different subreddits as well as Samsung customer forums.
