Sony is once again looking forward to making its entry into the handheld gaming console market, a market which was previously dominated by it but exited following a loss to Nintendo.

In a report from Bloomberg, Sony on Monday indicated that it is in the process of developing a new PlayStation handheld console which will be designed for mobile gaming. However, it is expected that this development might take a few years before the console is actually available for the users in the market, and there are still chances that Sony might not choose to release it.

The Japanese giant right now has a handheld option with the PlayStation portal which is like a secondary screen for the PlayStation 5 main console. Despite the limited features it has, the Portal is performing better than Sony expected it to. This led to a serious thought about creating a standalone portable console.

Sony is working on the Portal and it has recently added a new update that allows users to stream games without the need for a local PS5. It is however not considered as a handheld console and hence ranks lower than Valve’s Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch

It is quite visible that Sony is eager to enter into the market of handheld gaming which has grown and become more competitive over time. Nintendo’s success with the Switch has opened the gates of potential profits available in the market.

When PSP was first launched in 2004, it was among the few portable gaming systems available in the market. Although it faced tough competition from the Nintendo DS, it still managed to differentiate itself with its new type of media disk. The PSP had better graphics than DS, and Sony delivered on its promise of offering console gaming on the move hence PSP is still remembered for its notable games.
